The Container Owners Association published a 'Guide to Container Tracking and Telematics Technology', providing container operators, leasing companies and other interested stakeholders with an overview of the technology issues that they might experience, and the choices that are available to them.

Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) launched its Smart Ship Solution, which received approval in principle from Lloyd's Register. The application is a fleet monitoring smart ECDIS and surveillance system. 

Hapag-Lloyd presented its new real-time container monitoring program 'Hapag-Lloyd LIVE'. The program offers real-time GPS location, temperature information, and power-off alerts, among other services. In an initial effort, the company is retrofitting its entire reefer fleet of some 100,000 containers.

ABS announced a partnership with Mission Secure to provide cyber protection. Based on the FCI Cyber Risk Methodology, the incorporation of the MSi platform aims to provide ABS with better cyber defence of industrial control systems that operate modern vessels and offshore platforms. FCI Cyber Risk Methodology provides a way to count and quantify risk.

Ahead of the 2020 sulphur cap, MPA Singapore warned captains and owners of ships that are caught burning non-compliant fuel, that they could face up to two years in prison. In addition, other penalties can also take place, such as a fine of up to S$10,000 ($7,400). MPA Singapore will also use fuel-testing service providers to conduct detailed laboratory analysis of fuel samples.

DNV GL announced that Samsung Heavy Industries INTELLIMAN Ship software is compliant with the EU-MRV and IMO-DCS regulations. The INTELLIMAN Ship is a smart ship solution, aiming to facilitate data management from fleet operation to life-cycle service. DNV GL confirmed that the software can be used as a recording and reporting tool.

MAN Energy Solutions introduced its new digital platform. MAN CEON collects and evaluates operating and sensor data, and enables the real-time monitoring of marine or power-plant engines, turbines and compressors. It also integrates data and information from MAN machinery and its operational environment, and uses intelligent analysis tools for evaluation and forecasting.

A report called 'Legal Opinion on Video Monitoring on Fishing Vessels with Special Focus on Other Comparable Cases' was published on March 7, showing that the use of video monitoring, or Remote Electronic Monitoring (REM), can be used on board EU fishing vessels to ensure proper catch reporting, and end illegal discarding of fish.

During the 2019 SMART4SEA Conference, Mike Konstantinidis, CEO, METIS Cyberspace Technology, described how Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning can apply in shipping and improve operations. As such, he talked about the METIS Virtual Agents, the first cyber personal assistant for vessel monitoring & management, interacting with its colleagues in the maritime company via natural language processing.
