Japan ratifies Bunker Convention and Nairobi Wreck Removal Convention

Japan has approved ratification of the ‘International Convention on Civil Liability for Bunker Oil Pollution Damage, 2001’ and the ‘Nairobi International Convention on the Removal of Wrecks, 2007’. Japan also amended the ‘Act on Liability for Oil Pollution Damage’ (the Act) in order to reflect the provisions of the two conventions. The amended Act will apply by March 2020.

Japan and India to develop port of Colombo

The governments of Japan, India and Sri Lanka signed a deal to develop a terminal at the Port of Colombo, aiming to meet the development of the Indian Ocean to the world trade, as Nikkei Asian reports. The three countries will develop the East Container terminal, located at the south part of the port of Colombo, which was recently expanded.

Largest cruise ship carrying Japan’s flag to be equipped with scrubber

NYK Cruises informed that the cruise ship Asuka II, the largest cruise vessel carrying the Japanese flag, will undergo works at the Sembcorp Marine Admiralty Yard in Singapore from the middle of January 2020, during which it will be retrofitted with a scrubber. Earlier during 2018, NYK Line had announced that it has secured a USD 80.65 million syndicated loan agreement with MUFG Bank Ltd., with the aim to install scrubbers.

Collisions the most common marine incidents, Japan reports

Japan Transport Safety Board informed that it launched 922 investigations in 2017. The majority of these cases included collisions, while 1,199 vessels were involved in the accidents, most of which were fishing vessels and pleasure boats. Of the 922 investigations launched in 2017, 216 were cases of collision, 182 cases of grounding; 138 cases of fatality/injury; and 104 cases of contact.

US chartered ship to search for missing Japanese fighter jet

The Japanese Defense Minister Takeshi Iwaya informed on April 23 that a US-chartered ship will join this month a deep-sea search for an F-35A fighter jet that recently crashed in the Pacific. The 'Van Gogh' will take part in the search effort by the Maritime Self-Defense Force and US forces off Aomori Prefecture. he jet crashed on April 9 during an Air Self-Defense Force night exercise after having taken off from Misawa Air Base in Aomori.
