BIMCO, FONASBA, IAPH, IFSMA, InterManager, INTERTANKO, IPTA and IUMI have published a climate change glossary to clarify and harmonise definitions and terminology to ensure that discussions around climate change and potential solutions for the shipping industry are based on a mutual understanding of what the commonly used terms mean.

As two more workers die in an enclosed space onboard a ship, InterManager has hit out at the shipping industry’s inadequate reporting of serious and fatal accidents.

InterManager, the international trade association for ship and crew managers, is raising awareness of the fact that seafarers are dying needlessly in lifeboat accidents, when maritime legislation doesn’t require vessels to be manned during drills.

The IMO Sub-Committee on Pollution Prevention and Response held its 9th session (PPR 9) from 4 – 8 April 2022, and Intermanager presents the results of the meeting.

Shipping needs to focus on its international nature and pull together at this difficult time, an emergency meeting of ship managers agreed today, according to InterManager.

Although we are seeing improvement with enclosed space accidents, complex instructions, time pressure, poor design, poor communication and the prevailing blame culture are key factors for caution by the industry. In that regard, Capt. Kuba Szymanski, InterManager highlights that is high time to stop blaming seafarers when an accident happens; instead of asking ‘how’, let’s start questioning about the reasons behind, ‘why’.

InterManager has teamed up with The Nautical Institute and the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST) to launch a maritime safety competition to share innovative and practical ideas to make entry into enclosed spaces safer.

Lloyd’s Register along with InterManager, used the former's SafetyScanner machine learning technology to identify new insights regarding lifeboat accidents, in order to help improve lifeboat safety at sea.

The IMO Maritime Safety Committee 104 took place from 4 to 8 October, considering a wide variety of issues that bother the shipping industry.
