The Minister of State (I/C) for Shipping and Chemical & Fertilizers Shri Mansukh Mandaviya is going to inaugurate the 5 projects completed under JNPT initiatives.

India's second-largest private-sector port and terminal company in terms of capacity and throughput, Essar Ports, announced a record of 20% cargo growth with a throughput of 27.29 MT, in the April to September period of the ongoing financial year, ending in March 31, 2020.

On a statement, on Tuesday, October 15, the Indian Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, said that the government is planning to put in place a comprehensive ‘Port Grid and Port Development’ plan for 204 minor ports throughout the country aiming to boost coastal shipping and inland waterways in six months, and further bring a Bill in Parliament to provide an uplift to major ports.

India's 12 major ports achieved a 5.65% increase in cargo handling to 60.07 million tonnes in April this fiscal year. This was mainly because of higher demand for coal, petroleum, oil and lubricants. These ports handled a total of 56.86 MT of cargo in April 2018. The growth at these port was mainly because of higher handling of coal, fertilisers and containers.

India’s Navayuga Container Terminal (NCT) reached a record as it handled 500.000 TEUs for the first time in a financial year. The milestone was achieved on March 27, with the jubilee TEU being handled on India-flagged containership SSL Kutch.

India’s government was announced to have set aside USD 21 million in this 2019's budget as expenditure for the Iranian southeastern port of Chabahar growth. In October 2018, Iran, India and Afghanistan inked an agreement on transit of goods via Chabahar. 

Iran's Shahid Beheshti Port in Chabahar, which was taken over by Indian Ports Global Limited last month, registered high volumes in in container loading and unloading. The Indian Chabahar port reached an increase in container and petroleum products unloading and loading by 61% and 81% respectively.

Indian Ports Association (IPA), under the guidance of Ministry of Shipping, launched the Port Community System 'PCS1x' on December 11. ‘PCS 1x’ is a cloud based new generation technology, with user-friendly interface.

For April until June 2018, nine ports - Kolkata including Haldia, Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Kamarajar, Chennai, Cochin, New Mangalore, JNPT and Deendayal (Kandla) Port have registered positive growth in traffic. The highest growth was registered by Kamarajar Port, with 11.93%.

Three major Indian ports, Paradip, Kamarajar, and VO Chidambarnar Port, are all set to pioneer water recycling and desalination of sea water in the port premises, after a decision made at the recent meeting of port chairmen, chaired by the Indian Minister of Shipping, Shri Nitin Gadkari.
