IMPA, representing the international community of pilots, conducts an annual safety campaign with the objective of reporting pilots’ experiences of ladders and boarding equipment to the IMO and the wider shipping community. 2020’s campaign received 6,394 reports from pilots operating across the world. 

The International Cargo Handling Coordination Association (ICHCA) collaborated with shipping associations, calling the industry to make progress on issues from the harmonisation of data, emerging technologies to supply chain transparency.

In light of the COVID-19 landscape, shipping major associations and port communities launched a new initiative called "Accelerating Digitalisation of Maritime Trade and Logistics".

The International Maritime Pilots Association conducted a Pilot Ladder Safety providing detailed information regarding the results they have concluded in. For a Maritime Pilot, embarking and disembarking a ship is a dangerous task. The method of operation has changed very little over the years, and a large percentage of vessels still do not comply with standards for those arrangements.

The American P&I Club issued a safety guide for shippers concerning the pilot boarding, as over the past five years, several injury incidents occurred from embarking and disembarking from a vessel’s pilot ladder.

The Marine Accident Investigators International Forum (MAIIF) in conjunction with the International Maritime Pilots’ Association (IMPA) have recently published a new poster designed to highlight the importance of sharing information during pilotage.

Pilots Steering a Course for the Future

Provides detailed information relative to ladders not up to the SOLAS standard In its report to the IMO's Maritime Safety Committee, the fifty-fifth session of the Sub-committee on Safety of Navigation (NAV 55) had requested the International Maritime Pilots' Association (IMPA) to provide detailed information to the Ship Design and Safety of Navigation Sub-committees, relative to specific ladders their members were asked to climb that were not up to the SOLAS standard.The campaign was run during one week at the end of September 2010, and involved the membership of IMPA, together with colleagues in the European Maritime Pilots' Association.Three years have passed since the last safety campaign was conducted. That campaign was carried out in response to a peak in fatalities to pilots and launch crews in 2006.IMPA has noted a slow decline in the level of defects, which, though still quite high, is at least heading in the right direction.IMPA is optimistic that the inclusion of pilot ladders in the ship's safety equipment inspection regime under the changes to SOLAS Chapter V Regulation 23, proceeding through the 27th IMO Assembly in autumn 2011, will have a profound effect on the standard found in future campaigns/surveys.Click here to view the ...
