The IMO Sub-Committee shed its focus on the  reports of fraudulent certificates, concluding that there is need for transparency and communication between maritime stakeholders.

The IMO Sub-Committee on Human Element, Training and Watchkeeping (HTW 9) took place 6-10 February 2023 in IMO headquarters, adopting STCW training provisions on bullying and harassment in the maritime sector, including sexual assault and sexual harassment.

The IMO Sub-Committee on Human Element, Training and Watchkeeping considered a proposal to prioritize the revision of the IMO model course 1.21 on Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities, with a view to including specific content to establish appropriate maritime workplace behavioural norms and essential human elements of psychological safety.  

The IMO Sub-Committee on Ship Design and Construction (SDC) held its 8th session from January 17 to 21, 2022. ABS provides an overview of the more significant issues progressed at this session, highlighting that the Sub-Committee finalized draft mandatory safety regulations for ships carrying more than 12 industrial personnel (IP).

The IMO working group meeting of governments on GHG reduction (ISWG—GHG 10) met this week in advance of the next meeting of the IMO Marine Environment  Protection Committee, which meets in the week of 22 November.

The 8th session of the IMO’s Sub-Committee on Navigation, Communications and Search and Rescue (NCSR) took place virtually on 19-23 April 2021. Among others, the meeting finalized work on the modernization of the requirements for the GMDSS.

The 8th session of IMO’s Sub-Committee on Pollution Prevention and Response (PPR 8) took place virtually on 22-26 March 2021. Among others, the meeting approved amendments to the IBC Code, and progressed discussions on the development of a standard for the verification of ballast water compliance monitoring devices.

The 7th session of the IMO’s Sub-Committee on Human Element, Training and Watchkeeping (HTW) took place virtually from 15 to 19 February, addressing challenges related to the issuance and maintenance of seafarer certificates during and after COVID-19 pandemic, and of the facilitation of seafarers’ electronic certificates and documents. DNV GL has provided a key outcome of the meeting. 

Amid COVID-19 pandemic, IMO has postponed several of its future meetings, in order to be in line with the World Health Organization and the UK Government guidance concerning planning and hosting.
