Climate change is a key concern for sustainable shipping, and using that as a base during session 4 of the 2022 GREEN4SEA Forum, experts shared their opinions on air emissions, as well as relevant regulations, such as the CII and the EEXI of the IMO, and recent regulations Fit For 55 and FuelEU, that the European Union launched.

Some important milestones for the EU MRV and IMO DCS are coming up in the first half of 2022. In that regard, DNV issued recommendations, highlighting that ship operators need to submit the reports as early as possible, at the latest by 31 March, to ensure timely verification.

As of 30th of April 2021, the reporting period regarding the EU MRV Regulation for the estimation of CO2 emissions from maritime has closed.

DNV GL announced that Samsung Heavy Industries INTELLIMAN Ship software is compliant with the EU-MRV and IMO-DCS regulations. The INTELLIMAN Ship is a smart ship solution, aiming to facilitate data management from fleet operation to life-cycle service. DNV GL confirmed that the software can be used as a recording and reporting tool.

The IMO fuel oil consumption data collection system became effective on 1 March 2018, requiring from ships of 5,000 gross tonnage and above to submit to their Administration annual reports on fuel oil consumption. In accordance with the latest amendments to Chapter 4 of MARPOL Annex VI, from 1 January 2019, ships must collect fuel oil consumption data based on a methodology that must be included in the Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan.

The IMO fuel oil consumption data collection system (IMO DCS) becomes effective on 1 March 2018, requiring from ships of 5,000 gross tonnage and above to submit to their Administration annual reports on fuel oil consumption and transport work parameters. This is a new requirement added to chapter 4 of MARPOL Annex VI, entitled as Regulation 22A.

Julien Dufour, CEO, Verifavia Shipping, talked to GREEN4SEA about the major industry developments and challenges ahead with respect to the emissions regulatory framework. Enforcement of sulphur regulations, in combination with the coming into force of two emission monitoring systems, the EU MRV and the IMO DCS, are expected as the major challenges for shipping companies in 2018, according to Mr. Dufour.

Verifavia Shipping has announced that it has been fully authorized by the UKAS as a global EU MRV verifier. This accreditation enables Verifavia Shipping to perform EU MRV services, not only for the assessment of monitoring plans, but also for the verification of carbon emission reports.
