The six crew members, who were kidnapped by pirates from the container ship 'Demeter', off the coast of Nigeria, were released after over three weeks of captivity. The six men, including the captain, were abducted from the Liberian-flagged vessel, while underway, off Bonny, on 21 October.

A crude oil tanker which was sailing around 21 nautical miles South-SouthWest of Bonny Island in Nigeria, on 1st of November, was approached by pirates. The tanker managed to escape, according to IMB.

In the early hours of Saturday morning, eight pirates boarded the Liberian-flagged container ship 'Demeter' and kidnapped six crewmembers, while the ship was sailing off Bonny Island, Nigeria.

A total of 121 incidents of piracy and armed robbery against ships were reported in the first nine months of 2017, according to the latest report by IMB. The report notes that, while piracy rates were down compared to the same period in 2016, there is continuing concern over attacks in the Gulf of Guinea and in South East Asia.

Four persons armed with a gun and knives boarded a LPG carrier, on September 7, around 35 nm off Pulau Aur, Malaysia, stealing crew and ship’s properties. The incident occurred only one day after 13 armed perpetrators boarded a Thai-flagged product tanker, off West Malaysia.

Two robbers boarded a bulk carrier and entered the steering gear room, while the ship was underway, off Pulau Nipah, Indonesia, on 20 August, according to the IMB Piracy Report Centre. The robbers threatened the duty oiler with a knife.

The General cargo vessel OYA1 was reported to have been under attack by pirates on July, around 15nm off Bonny Island, Nigeria, Gulf of Guinea. The IMB Piracy Reporting Center confirmed the attacked and informed that 'some crew members were missing'.

ICC International Maritime Bureau reveals a decline in the number of reported incidents as according to its newly published report, from January to June 2017, a total of 87 incidents have been reported, compared with 97 for the same period of the previous year. However, violence against crew continues and IMB urges caution.

The European Community Shipowners’ Associations announced that they are concerned about the continued piracy, armed robbery attacks and kidnapping for ransom events in the Gulf of Guinea, and particularly off Nigeria. ECSA encourages several measures in order to improve the security situation, including proper protection by coastal states .

IMB piracy issued its latest report, "Piracy & Armed Robbery against ships", which shows that pirates and armed robbers attacked 43 ships and captured 58 seafarers in the first quarter of 2017, slightly more than the same period last year.
