The National power company of Icealnd, Landsvirkjun, the Westfjords Regional Development Office and the Westfjord Power Company signed an agreement in order to launch an energy transition and innovation project.

Clean Article Alliance along with the Iceland Nature Conservation Association (INCA) urge government to immediately act and eliminate the use of heavy fuel oil and carriage within Iceland’s 200 nautical mile Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

The Government of Iceland and the Minister for the Environment and Natural Resources recently published a new regulation, tightening fuel requirements in Iceland's territorial waters. Through the regulation, the government aims to enhance improved air quality in harbors and comply with its coalition agreement and climate action plan.

The Arctic Council’s Arctic Shipping Best Practice Information Forum convened for the third time since its inception in 2017, in London from 3-4 June, under Iceland Chairmanship. The aim of the Forum is to support the effective implementation of IMO’s International Code for Ships Operating in Polar Waters (Polar Code). 

Iceland has not issued a permit on time to allow Hvalur Hf to hunt fin whales this year. Namely, the Government published regulations establishing whaling quotas in February, but the timing of the permit means that Hvalur will not be able to use the quota. Hvalur hf. is the last company in Iceland to hunt endangered fin whales.

In light of Iceland's Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources decision, which bans the use of fuel oil with more than 0.1% sulphur content for ships operating in its territorial waters, Dr Sian Prior, Lead Advisor to the Clean Arctic Alliance, highlighted that the Alliance although supports this decision, they are in favour of generally banning HFO use and carriage as fuel.
