The International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) published a new study, investigating the potential of both liquid and compressed hydrogen fuel cells to replace fossil fuels for bulk carriers, including when paired with wind-assisted propulsion in the form of rotor sails.

The International Council on Clean Transport’s (ICCT) Marine Program Lead, Bryan Comer, called the IMO to pick a ‘zero date’ – the year by which shipping’s life cycle carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions are zero.

A new report on scrubber washwater, published by the International Council for Clean Transportation, indicates that shipping produces nearly as many tonnes of the effluent in a year as the cargo it carries. 

Presented by Bryan Comer, ICCT senior marine researcher, and Nikita Pavlenko, ICCT senior fuels researcher, the video focuses on the climate implications of using LNG as a marine fuel.

The International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) in its latest report focused on the CO2 reduce emissions issue, by limiting engine power. In fact, the study shows that shipping Green House Gas (GHG) emissions have been reduced by 30% during a ten-year period from 2008 to 2018.

ICCT issued a white paper studying Emission Control Areas in China, considering the potential for ships to route around the ECA. The paper reveals that ECAs which are too narrow may actually increase emissions if ship operators divert to save on fuel costs.

ICCT issued five briefing papers summarizing HFO use in the IMO Polar Code Arctic, for 2015. While ships registered in Russia consumed the most HFO by far in the region in 2015, followed by Denmark and South Korea, Russian-flagged fishing vessels emitted about 10 tonnes of BC, 10-times more than Denmark and South Korea.

There are eight Arctic states; however, ships that operate in the Arctic fly many flags. Summarizing the use and carriage of HFO in the IMO’s Polar Code Arctic by flag state, an ICCT report finds that Russian-flagged ships consumed the most HFO by far in the area in 2015, distantly followed by Canada and Denmark.

Maritime fuel consumption increased from 291 to 298 million tonnes (+2.4%), while CO2 emissions from global shipping increased from 910 to 932 million tonnes, from 2013 to 2015, according to a study released by the International Council on Clean Transportation.

The International Council on Clean Transportation issued a new study, compiling a ship emissions inventory in China's Greater Pearl River Delta, a heavily populated and prosperous region with heavy ship traffic. The report reveals that in 2015, ships emitted 104 thousand tonnes of sulfur oxides.
