Jon Anders Ryste, Senior Consultant, Environment Advisory, DNV GL presents a recent study, whose ambition is to assess the commercial and operational viability of alternative marine fuels. The study analyzed six fuels, having LNG as its base for comparison.

Japan Engine Corporation (J-ENG) announced a cooperation with Japan's National Maritime Research Institute to start the research and development in the field of combustion of carbon-free fuel, as one of solutions for decarbonization.

Port of Antwerp has ordered construction of a tug powered by hydrogen, the first in the world. This 'Hydrotug' is driven by combustion engines that burn hydrogen in combination with diesel. The motors also comply with the very strictest standard, the EU Stage V.

The joint initiative 'Hydroports' will develop a hydrogen cluster, located in the north-west of the Netherlands, that will focus on energy transition and boost the role of green hydrogen in the shipping industry. Specifically, 'Hydroports' consists of the Port of Rotterdam, Den Helder and Groningen. 

In the three years following, Europe's biggest green hydrogen plant preparations will take place in the Port of Rotterdam, as hydrogen will lead the energy transition system. Water is the only residual product of hydrogen; Yet, up to now hydrogen can be maintained by converting natural gas at high temperatures which led to CO2 release, as well. 

Germany-based MAN Energy Solutions  announced it has become a partner of the Bavarian Hydrogen Council, focusing on expanding hydrogen technology in Bavaria. As partner, the company will work with other major players from politics, finance and science to drive the development of hydrogen technology.

Ørsted, along with ITM Power and Element Energy, has won funding from the UK Government for a green hydrogen project. The Gigastack feasibility study, led by ITM Power, is a six-month project to investigate the possible delivery of bulk, low-cost and zero-carbon hydrogen. 

Asia’s hydrogen gas demand will increase as its oil refineries use the gas to produce low-sulphur fuel to comply with new environmental regulations. Asian countries have tightened their fuel standards by decreasing the amount of allowed sulphur, thus pushing refiners to upgrade facilities, in order to produce compliant diesel and gasoline supplies.

Compagnie Maritime Belge (CMB), based in Antwerp, and Japanese shipbuilder Tsuneishi Facilities & Craft (TFC) announced their collaboration to construct a hydrogen-powered ferry. TFC will bring its state-of-the-are shipbuilding expertise, whereas CMB Technologies will bring their knowledge on marine hydrogen systems.

Point and Sandwick Trust along with Wood, Siemens-Gamesa, Engie, ITM, CMAL, Johnston Carmichael and Ferguson Marine, published a feasibility study to assess the suitability of using hydrogen produced from local wind farms to power future ferry services operating in the Western Isles and West Coast of Scotland.
