The ITF urged flag states to take responsibility and account for the health and wellbeing of all crew and passengers onboard their vessels, amid the humanitarian crisis brought by COVID-19 pandemic. 

Human Rights at Sea recently issued a case of bullying and harassment towards an Indian Chief Engineer from a Turskish Master onboard a Marshall Islands flagged vessel. In fact, the case remains redacted and the identities are protected, since the matter is under investigation by Human Rights at Sea.

A workshop organized by key UN and European instruments took place in Lisbon Portugal, on 18-20 February, aimed to help all stakeholders, particularly, developing countries, build the capacity they need to ratify and implement the MLC.

According to GMF, the global maritime industry has been able to address some of its most pressing issues and act as a leader. While many of the issues will remain, the efforts that have been taken to tackle corruption and the impacts on the environment have been considered successful examples of collective action to address global issues.

Royal Navy and Royal Marines around UK celebrated the 20 years anniversary since the lifting of the ban on LGBT men and women serving in the armed forces. Naval bases and Royal Marines units, flied rainbow flags from their main base, while sailors attended a House of Commons reception and Portsmouth’s Naval Base headquarters lit up in colors to mark the anniversary.

Human Rights at Sea published its latest briefing note concerning the exploitative recruitment fees in the maritime industry and further calls for an end to such fees for workers in a call to action. Namely, Human Rights at Sea note that such “misleading and exploitative recruitment practices by some labor recruiters and overseas employment agencies are a continued blight on raising social welfare and human rights standards in the global maritime sector”.

On the occasion of these important developments in 2019, Mr. David Hammond Esq., Barrister (Non-Practising), CEO, Human Rights At Sea shares his insights into achieving greater equality, justice and freedom within the maritime industry in the next years, highlighting that not much progress has been made so far while wider awareness on this important topic is of outmost importance.

U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney, the Chairwoman of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, and Rep. Bennie G. Thompson, the Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the results of the investigation they conducted concerning how the USCG handled bullying incidents and allegations over harassment. Thus, they provide seven recommendations, as the investigation revealed that there is still room for improvement.
