Challenges in the Selections and Installation of BWTS

There are many critical elements in relation to the design, selection and installation of BWTS. The process is a quadric-modal one which starts with the selection and the design study, followed by detailed study and installation. However, we will confront a lot of challenges in the process. What is critical is what lies below the iceberg. Had the Convention been validated tomorrow, we would need to do 40-50 retrofits every day until the end of 2017. Having that number in mind, it seems that we should not over emphasize the selection process. Unfortunately, we don't have feedback from BWTS already installed. We are dealing with a case of public pressure putting the regulations ahead of technology. We can apply advanced selection techniques like fuzzy- logic or multi-criteria decision analysis, or simpler statistical grading of  questions which can be grouped  related to technical, health and safety , financial, operation, installation and maintenance considerations. The one million question is '' are we going to have the time to go through this grading and selection process?'' The installation questions we have is where to place the system, how to integrate it with  the remaining machinery and what to do. We have to forget ...

Emissions Regulations: Sense and Nonsense

My presentation on emissions regulations may be a little controversial because I'll discuss about things that more and more people start to realize but so far nobody likes to speak about. The IMO makes environmental regulations by looking at one issue at a time and that sometimes results in regulations which have conflicting effects with other environmental issues. The pressure at IMO to do something fast is high and as a result, the regulation may come before technologies are ready or without enough scientific justification for the effectiveness of the regulation, such as the example of ballast water treatment or even by over simplifying the problem, like in my opinion is the example of EEDI and EEOI. This is not a 100% IMO's fault because Member States threaten to proceed with their own regulations if IMO doesn't do it. ECAs will come down to a limit of 0.1% sulfur from next year with an intention for a global ECA for fuel to be used to contain only 0.5% of sulfur from 2020. However, science tells us that reducing SOx warms the atmosphere i.e. SOx cools the atmosphere according to an article from a scientific magazine actually written by eminent scientists, ...

Retrofitting a scrubber, a shipowner’ s experience

DFDS operates one of Europe's largest integrated shipping and logistics networks, offering comprehensive supply chain and shipping solutions to customers. DFDS is in the forefront of scrubber retrofit actually because we have some good background for doing that. We own a number of the ships we operate and therefore, we are able to control the long-term deployment and have knowledge of our activities inside the SECA. We have the money, and don't underestimate this because you'll find it very difficult to find financing for scrubbers, it does not really add to the value of a ship and financial institutions intend to like some kind of collateral, however your ship value will not increase. We also think that the scrubbers are better than MGO for the environment so we have a next top added benefit here. In the past, we installed the first system already back in 2009, we installed three more last year, we've also installed one already this year, we actually have two ships in dry dock right now to be installed with more scrubbers and in total this year we will do seven and will probably do another seven in 2015. We have set aside about 100 million ...

Arctic Shipping Developments

First things first, when talking about Arctic shipping, firstly, we need to define the area we are talking about : Arctic is considered the Polar Region north of Arctic Circle, (the 66° 33 parallel) including two shipping roads: the Northern Sea Route (NSR) the one close to Russia shore and the Northwest Passage (NWP) close to the Canadian Shore. According to traffic statistics prior to 2010 there was no commercial traffic in the region, however due to climate change, there has been a substantial change leading to 71 transits for the 2013 season. Shorter roads are making these transits more attractive as distances may be shorter 1,000 miles or more on the NWP or 3,500 miles on the NSR as it may be seen in relevant figure: Historic Firsts in Arctic Shipping First foreign ship to transit NSR: Heavy lifts MV Foresight & MV Fraternity operated by Beluga Shipping Group in 2009 Largest tanker to cross NSR: MV Baltica (100,000 DWT) operated by Sovcomflot First foreign ship to cross the NSR: MV Nordic Barents operated by Nordic Bulk carriers First passenger ship to transit NSR: Russian state owned Georg Ots First Suezmax Supertanker through NSR: MV Vladimir Thikonov (162,000 DWT) operated ...
