The Union of Greek Shipowners applauds the progress made by the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 74) of the United Nations International Maritime Organization (UN IMO) with regard to the issues related to the challenges stemming from the implementation of the new 0.5% sulphur limit on marine fuels.

During the 74th session of its Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 74), concluded Friday, IMO agreed stricter energy efficiency targets for certain types of ships, as part of its efforts to reduce shipping emissions. 

As UN IMO Marine Environment and protection Committee 74 (MEPC 74) meeting is taking place this week, the Union of Greek Shipowners (UGS) calls all stakeholders to take on responsibility and contribute to global policy making and commit to reaching attainable, workable and sustainable solutions to the problems related to the 2020 global sulphur cap in marine fuels and the issue of the GHG emissions reduction from ships.

The Clean Arctic Alliance urged the IMO Member States to reduce the impact of black carbon emissions from international shipping on the Arctic environment, as the UN body gathers in London for a meeting of its MEPC74. During the meeting, a number of issues, including black carbon emissions and heavy fuel oil in the Arctic will feature on the agenda.

The UK government is setting out its plans to cut fossil fuel emissions to zero by 2050, aiming to tackle climate change. UK's zero emissions target is possible to launch in the next two months. Such a strategy would lead to stricter restrictions on GHG. As of now, the UK already has a goal to reduce GHG by 80% until 2050.

WattTime, a nonprofit artificial intelligence firm, announced that it will cooperate with Google.org on a new project that has to do with the use of global network of satellites to measure carbon emissions from all large power plants worldwide and render the information public.

About 100 maritime companies and nine NGOs sent an open letter to IMO on the need of implementing speed restrictions for all commercial ships. The letter said 'As the initial step we express our strong support for the IMO implementing mandatory regulation of global ship speeds differentiated across ship type and size categories'.

The climate school strike movement is now worldwide, bringing about 1.5 million children and young people to the streets, protesting for their governments to take action and address climate change. Now, the movement has turned its focus at the shipping industry. Until now, climate school strikes have taken place in 2,000 cities across the world. Among these countries are the ones that have attempted to block climate action at IMO.

The International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH), along with several IMO member states and NGOs, are expected to submit a draft resolution to the upcoming MEPC next week, encouraging voluntary cooperation between ports and shipping to reduce vessel GHG emissions. 

A study called 'Climate benefits of proposed carbon dioxide mitigation strategies for international shipping and aviation' is focused on the role the emissions from international shipping and aviation play in the global climate, and what do those sectors need to do to help keep warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius.
