The US Coast Guard and good Samaritans aboard several commercial vessels responded to a vessel fire on the 650-foot Sincerity Ace 1,800 nautical miles northwest of Oahu on the high seas, on December 31. 16 of the 21 crew were rescued, but there are five missing, with fears that three of them are dead.

The asphalt carrier 'Amber Bay' suffered an engine room fire as it began to depart the New York Harbor area, at the night of Wednesday, December 19. The vessel is disabled and the United States Coast Guard is coordinating the response operations.

A fire broke out onboard ‘M/V Wight Sky’, a RoRO ferry, while she was in berth at Lymington, Hampshire, England, early this morning, December 14. The ferry 'Gerbang Samudra I' caught fire early on December 2. The incident happened after the vessel had left Surabaya, Java and was heading for the port of Banarmasin in Kalimantan. 145 people were rescued , but according to information 3 are missing.

Two people were injured after a fire erupted onboard the new Russian diesel-electric icebreaker 'Viktor Chernomyrdin' which is currently under construction at Admiralty Shipyards, in St. Petersburg. The fire was first reported at about 1900 hrs Tuesday, engulfing an area of 300 square meters, on the third and fourth of the ship's decks.

A fire broke out at the engine room of the Turkish cargo ship 'Kilic 1' off the coast of Greece. Kilic 1 which had left Tunisia for Turkey, carries twenty tons of diesel oil in its tanks. Greek maritime authorities arrived upon the scene in force, with over six Coast Guard vessels, a navy helicopter and multiple tugs that attempted to put out the fire.

According to EMSA data, the last seven years, 3,236 Ro-Ro accidents were reported out of which 25% are fire related, 19% collisions and 16% are attributed to loss of control.
