The European Commission has approved, under the European Merger Regulation, the acquisition by French container ship giant CMA CGM of the Finnish container shipping and logistics company Containerships. The Commission concluded that the proposed merger would not raise competition concerns,

European shipowners are pleased with the signature of the EU-Singapore trade agreement, as it represents EU and Singapore's 'commitment to free, fair and rules-based trade at a time that protectionism is on the rise'. The EU and Singapore agreement was signed during last week’s Asia-Europe summit and contains the liberalisation principles of international maritime transport services. 

The EU Transport Commissioner Violeta Bulc initiated the European network for drone demonstration projects. The network aims to share knowledge on how to keep drone operations safe, secure and green. It focuses on the U-space: a system that connects all drones flying in the air and that makes all drones visible for authorities and citizens.

On Monday 5 November, the European Parliament's Committee on Transport will discuss the European Maritime Single Window environment (EMSWe) Regulation, to reduce the amount of time that ships spend on reporting procedures. The Port of Rotterdam welcomes this development, as it thinks that data harmonization is of great importance.

Three European Commission co-funded initiatives: Poseidon Med II, CYnergy and Elemed, are leading the uptake of alternative fuels in the Eastern Mediterranean region. Poseidon Med II aims to promote LNG, CYnergy wants to promote self-sufficiency in energy and Elemed aims for the uptake of zero emissions, zero noise and zero impact.

The members of the European Network of Maritime Clusters have unanimously agreed, during the annual meeting held in Malta, that the Brexit deal must minimise disruption at ports and to the complex European supply chains. In order to achieve this, negotiations need 'calm heads and a sharp focus'.

Marine-i, an EU funded program created to advance marine innovation in Cornwall, has made a grant award to the Falmouth-based company, Kiote. This company has created a new concept in sail technology that can propel an autonomous vessel. The system could be automatically controlled

The European Commission has approved the extension of the current Danish tonnage tax scheme to additional types of vessels. This aims to encourage ship registration in Europe and contribute to the global competitiveness of the sector without distorting competition.

The proposal considers the obligation for fishermen to bring to land all catches as of 1st January 2019. It also reduces the catch limits in seven fish management areas compared to 2017-2018 levels, including for alfonsinos and black scabbardfish. Fishing for orange roughy will remain prohibited.

The European Union has approved Baleària's project, after the company submitted it to the call of funds CEF. This project aims to retrofit five ferries of Baleària so that they can run on LNG.  The European Commission granted to the Baleària € 11,797,424 for the retrofit of the ships, which will be carried out from the end of 2018 until 2021.
