The new vessels will be the first examples of a new series of hybrid Ro-Ro vessels, which will use fossil fuel during navigation and electricity while in port, ensuring "zero emissions in port". The vessels will be equipped with mega lithium batteries which will allow them to meet the energy requirements while at berth.

Swedish shipping company Stena Line released its yearly overview for 2017, revealing a 15% decrease in its sulphur emissions, reduced plastic onboard and a decreased number of accidents among the seagoing staff, in line with its sustainability strategy initiated in 2016.

Norwegian shipbuilder Havyard delivered the first of thirteen battery-powered ferries with automatic fjord crossing functionality at Norwegian transport conglomerate Fjord 1. The ferry 'Bnr 132 MF Husavik' was christened on 14 May in a ceremony at the yard in Leirvik in Sogn.

Electric ferries and digital communication between ships can play an important role in decarbonising maritime transport. Hybrid vehicles, using electricity in the harbour and fossil fuels on the open sea are becoming increasingly widespread, while a digital system will optimise their route as well as their messages to and from the harbour authorities.

Taiwan deployed two new electric powered bunker tankers, as the state-supported CPC Corporation launched the two vessels at the port of Kaohsiung, on April 23. The two ships were built in order for the company to meet the growing demand for more environmentally friendly projects, and to achieve the country’s target to become a greener society. The ships were built in Singapore, tested in Vietnam, and were deployed in the Kaohsiung Harbor in January, from where they will start their operations as refueling tankers.

Under a program to clean up its canals and waterways, the City of Suzhou in eastern China has commissioned 177 electric workboats, designed specifically to remove floating debris from the water. The river Suzhou Creek, which flows through the city to Shanghai, was once the most contaminated waterways in China.

Washington Governor signed the 2018 state transportation budget, which includes a US$600,000 research fund to Washington State Ferries, to explore conversion of three ferries in the state fleet from diesel to hybrid electric, up to 2019. The three selected vessels of the Jumbo Mark II Class consume 26% of the fuel in the WSF fleet.

A new collaboration between six organisations, called 'Electromobility for Shipping', intends to promote shipping electrification, with the aim of a more sustainable future in the maritime sector. The organisations will jointly contribute to climate-smart shipping, international competitiveness and increased export opportunities for green technologies.

The Government of Ontario has accepted Damen's proposal to build two ferries with full electric propulsion, to operate in the Canadian waters of the Great Lakes. The vessels will be the first fully electric, non-cable vessels in Canada, estimated to reduce emissions by the equivalent of 7 million kg carbon dioxide per year.

Plugging a ship into shore-side power and turning off onboard generators is one solution to reduce air pollution from ships, as well as limit local noise. For this reason, IMO will examine safety aspects of on shore power supply to ships, also known as “cold ironing”, “alternative maritime power” and “shore-side electricity”.
