In its ongoing investigation of the sinking of the cargo ship El Faro, the NTSB informed that it is adding additional material to the accident docket. Two items related to the El Faro’s voyage data recorder transcript were added Wednesday, including an addendum and an errata sheet.

NTSB issued a report, urging the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the National Weather Service, and the US Coast Guard to take action on tropical cyclone recommendations, in the interest of mariner safety. The recommendations derive primarily from the NTSB’s ongoing investigation into the sinking of cargo vessel El Faro on October 2015.

On February 17, the U.S. investigators concluded the public phase of a probe into the sinking of the El Faro cargo ship, with final comments from the parties of interest and a 33-second moment of silence in memory of the crew who died.

USCG has held Marine Board of Investigation hearings into El Faro accident focusing on the transcript of the containership’s bridge audio recordings, released by NTSB last year. During the hearings, testimonies revealed that the cargo ship that sank after losing propulsion in a hurricane could have suffered a catastrophic boiler explosion and investigated the ship’s safety culture onboard.

The NTSB has announced that a transcript from the El Faro’s voyage data recorder bridge audio is one of five factual reports added to the NTSB’s El Faro investigation docket as part of the agency’s ongoing investigation into the maritime tragedy.

On August 15, a voyage data recorder group was convened to audition the El Faro’s VDR and to develop a detailed transcript of the sounds and discernible words captured on the cargo ship’s bridge audio. A few months later, the NTSB announces its intent to open the docket for its investigation into the sinking of the ship.

Hurricane Mathew will not be an obstacle to TOTE ships as they plan to continue their cargo schedule and not postpone it despite warnings. Matthew is one of the most powerful Atlantic hurricanes in recent history and is forecast nearing the western tip of Haiti.

The National Transportation Safety Board has announced the convening of a voyage data recorder group, to develop a detailed transcript of the sounds and discernible words captured on the El Faro’s bridge audio, following the audition of the ship’s VDR.
