The US Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure passed a bill to enhance maritime safety in response to the tragic loss of the El Faro in 2015. The Maritime Safety Act of 2018, implements the Commandant of the Coast Guard’s final action memo regarding the sinking of the El Faro. The bill includes provisions that require Voyage Data Recorders float free after an accident, among others.

The NTSB issued an illustrated digest report, summarizing key safety issues and recommendations, on the El Faro sinking, the deadliest shipping disaster involving a US-flagged vessel in more than 30 years. Earlier investigations have attributed the disaster to the captain’s failure, as well as to inefficient procedures compliance onboard. 

USCG issued a safety alert to inform operators of the role that the main propulsion lube oil system was found to have played in the El Faro casualty, recommending that ship engineers review the operational procedures and limitations of vital propulsion machinery, and verify compliance with SOLAS, Class, and regulatory standards.

The US Coast Guard released its Final Action Memo regarding the 2015 S.S. El Faro sinking, which resulted in the loss of its entire crew. In the Final Action Memo, USCG approves the findings of fact, analysis, and conclusions detailed in the Marine Board of Investigation’s Report of Investigation.

USCG official investigation report on El Faro cargo vessel found that the captain underestimated the strength of a hurricane and overestimated the ship's strength on a trip between Florida and Puerto Rico. Also, ship's owner, Tote Maritime Inc., had not replaced a safety officer and had violated regulations regarding crew rest periods and working hours.

The US National Transportation Safety Board announced that it plans to meet on 12 December, in Washington, to determine the probable cause of the October 2015 sinking of the cargo ship El Faro in the Atlantic Ocean.
