A recent study carried out in the Laboratory of Industrial Management at Åbo Akademi University indicates that improved ship utilization rates and investments in environmentally sustainable technologies for enhanced energy efficiency would not only significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions within navigation but would also contribute to lowering freight costs.

ContainerShips, the subsidiary of CMA CGM Group, officially announced that successfully delivered its 4th LNG-fueled ship, the "CONTAINERSHIPS ARCTIC", enhancing its role in the sustainable shipping market. Specifically, the 1,380-TEU containerships were delivered on 10 December 2019.

Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri hosted a keel laying ceremony in Monfalcone for the 'MSC Seashore', the the first of two enriched “Seaside Evo” Class ships for MSC Cruises. When it enters into service in June 2021, the ship will be the company’s longest ship, featuring 339 metres and environmental technology. 

Finnish shipyard Rauma Marine Constructions has begun construction of the world's most environmentally friendly RoPax vessel for the consortium Kvarken Link, to operate between Vaasa in Finland and Umeå in Sweden. A traditional steel cutting ceremony was held at the shipyard on 16 September.

The Italian shipyard VSY launched a motor yacht that incorporates environmental systems to allow navigation in marine protected areas. The 64 meter-long motor yacht Atomic is equipped with a dynamic positioning system designed to minimize the impact on the seabed when anchoring.

Viking Line realized a keel laying ceremony for its new cruise ship 'Viking Glory' on 3 June, at the Xiamen Shipbuilding Industry shipyard in China. The ship, expected to operate in Baltic, is equipped with wind-power driven rotors and environmentally friendly engines.

The huge sailing yacht 'Black Pearl' made headlines in recent months, not only for claiming the title of the largest sailing superyacht in the world, but also for featuring hybrid propulsion system and waste heat recovery. Analysts suggest the development of the Black Pearl reflects a growing trend for large yachts to be greener.

South Korean major shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries announced that its newly spun-off company Hyundai Global Services, specializing in providing total marine services, has signed a MoU with compatriot shipping company KSS Line, for entering into eco-friendly ship business.

South Korean Shipping company Hyundai Merchant Marine has selected three compatriot shipbuilders for the construction of its twenty eco-friendly mega container ships, under the company's ‘Capacity of 1 Million TEU’ strategy, and the Korean government’s ‘5 Year Plan for Rebuilding Korean Shipping’ plan.

Spanish ferry operator Baleària has put into service the 'Eco Lux' to the Eivissa-Formentera route, the second eco-fast ferry in the series of four that are destined to cover this line. Compared with the ships of the Maverick series, operating this line until recently, the 'Eco Aqua' reduces CO2 emissions by around 35%.
