Electric ferries and digital communication between ships can play an important role in decarbonising maritime transport. Hybrid vehicles, using electricity in the harbour and fossil fuels on the open sea are becoming increasingly widespread, while a digital system will optimise their route as well as their messages to and from the harbour authorities.

Hutchison Ports Thailand launched the construction of its $600 million Terminal D facility at Laem Chabang during a press conference. The new facility will include the world’s first container terminal that will be fully equipped with remote control technologies. After the construction of Terminal D, it will be able to facilitate the growth of container numbers at Laem Chabang.

In her presentation at SAFETY4SEA Cyprus Conference, Mrs. Christiana Moustaki, Senior Crew Manager, Fleet Management, insisted on putting people first, at the dawn of the smart shipping revolution. She said that today, the global supply of officers is forecasted to increase steadily, but this is predicted to be outplaced by increasing demand.

The world’s first blockchain-based platform for electronic certificates of origin was presented in Singapore by the Singapore International Chamber of Commerce and Singapore-based vCargo Cloud. The platform wants to improve transparency, security and efficiency in authenticating trade documents.

APM Terminals Pipavav developed an online version of Form 13 required for each import/export container. Known as e-form 13, it can save up to 3 million kilometres of road trips and their carbon emissions each year. Previously at APM Terminals Pipavav, shipping lines collected documents to issue a completed Form 13 for each import/export container. 

Transport and logistics businesses are investing in Internet of Things-based smart technologies to help them take advantage of the wealth of opportunities that the Fourth Industrial Revolution offers, according to a research by Inmarsat revealing that the sector is prioritising IoT, machine learning and robotics to increase efficiency.

INTENS, a Finnish research collaborative consortium, led by the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, has jointly committed over €13 million in the next three years, with funding support of €5.6 million from Business Finland, the public agency for research funding, to promote and digitalize the country's marine industry.

Stelios Koroneos, CEO at Soldecom, talks about the effects of digitisation in the shipping industry, highlighting that shipping has gone through a number of disruptions since the past, which required changes to the way that the whole sector is operating. Digitisation is now the new trend, but it requires vessels to be extensively retrofitted to comply with regulations, or else they will be scrapped.

INTTRA issued the key takeaways from a survey to its Tech Summit attendees, on key business challenges and appetite for digital transformation. 82% of responders said they currently process automation and digitalization, while 46% said the biggest container shipping challenge for carriers is data sharing across the supply chain.

Namely, MCA’s Technical Manager, Mark Ford, will update on the eCMID system, and Captain Andy Goldsmith will highlight reactivation of DP vessels.
