A new research facility aiming to address the key cyber security challenges facing the shipping industry is being established at the University of Plymouth. The £3million Cyber-SHIP Lab, supported by funding from Research England, part of UK Research and Innovation, and industry, will gather connected maritime systems currently found on an actual ship’s bridge.

During the SAFETY4SEA Hamburg Forum, Chronis Kapalidis, Cyber Expert, HudsonAnalytix, referred to myths behind cyber security. He stressed that the narrative about cybersecurity, when talking to industry stakeholders should focus on cyber risk and cyber resilience instead of cybersecurity.

Reuters reports that Nokia aims towards Malaysian ports in efforts to bring its 5G technology market in the area and prepare the Southeast Asian country for the launch of a fast mobile internet service next year. Nokia is expected to face challenges due to the fact that China’s Huawei has already signed 5G deals with telecoms firms in Malaysia as it battles a U.S. blacklist. 

The Panama Canal and the Panama Maritime Authority upgraded their Panama Maritime Single Window System (VUMPA), highlighting the positive effects of digitalization and informing that according to estimations the VUMPA has reduced the need for more than 300,000 paper forms and documents, improving the efficiency and carbon footprint of transshipment procedures and saving up to 3,260 hours on an annual basis.

During the SAFETY4SEA Hamburg Forum, Mathias Karlsson, Researcher, RISE Viktoria, talked about Port Collaborative Decision Making and how digitalization can improve operations at ports. PortCDM aims to improve efficiency and effectiveness of activities in any port by providing a framework for data sharing and enhanced collaboration, thus making their operations more efficient.

IEA recently launched its "Energy Efficiency 2019" report, focusing on the important role of energy efficiency in today's world that can boost the economic developments and help prevent GHG emissions; Yet, the report highlights that the global progress rate is slowing down. 

Inmarsat launched its 2019 Superyacht Connectivity report highlighting that 80% of superyacht professionals are not fully aware on how to boost their cyber security measures, adding that some do not have a third-party organisation in charge of their security management on-board.

Leaders from around the world gathered for the Global Maritime Forum’s Annual Summit on 30-31 October in Singapore, to develop concrete solutions to the most important challenges facing the maritime industry, including decarbonization, improvement of efficiency and safety and attracting new generation. 

UNCTAD released the Review of Maritime Transport 2019, presenting a fall in maritime trade growth. Moreover, trade policy crosscurrents, geopolitics and sanctions, environmental worries, fuel economics and tensions regarding the Strait of Hormuz, have all contributed to slower growth in merchandise trade.

Maqta Gateway, a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi Ports inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Etisalat to boost digitalization across its port facilities, by launching technologies such as  cloud computing, IoT and big data, paving the way for a new era of digital transformation in the maritime sector.
