In order for an ambitious GHG reduction strategy to be delivered, Zero Emission Vessels will need to form a significant proportion of newbuilds in shipping fleets from 2030. A new study by LR and UMAS demonstrates the viability of ZEVs, identifying what needs to be in place to make them a competitive solution for decarbonisation. 

An international shipping industry group gathered in Bonn to create a draft Action Plan that maps out how shipping can contribute to GHG reductions and decarbonization in order to comply with the high ambition climate change target of limiting global temperatures to 1.5oC.

Commenting on the events of COP23, Dr Uwe Lauber, CEO of MAN Diesel & Turbo, noted that the meeting offers a new opportunity to accelerate the ‘Maritime Energy Transition’, although the hopes and demands of the shipping industry for a strengthened mandate of the IMO were not fulfilled in Paris. 

As part of this year's UN Climate Change Conference COP23 in Bonn, consolidating the aims and ambitions of the Paris Agreement, a group of international shipping leaders will meet on 13 November, onboard the RheinFantasie river vessel,  to create an Action Plan for the decarbonisation of the maritime sector.

Hailing the agreement, the green transport group Transport & Environment said Europe cannot indefinitely outsource its climate responsibility to the IMO, as "the UN agency has repeatedly shown itself incapable of delivering the required level of ambition."

Carbon Pricing Leadership Coalition and Carbon War Room called for shipping’s financial institutions to begin analysing and managing the risks created by the shipping industry’s imminent decarbonisation, during a global Maritime Forum roundtable in London.

A study about the downstream of the refining sector exposure to the climate risks concludes that its values and earning can be possibly reduced in half by 2035, as a quarter of global refining capacity could become unviable and be forced to close by then.

The progress made in starting to shape a draft comprehensive IMO strategy on reduction of GHG emissions from ships has been reported to the COP 23 climate change conference, meeting in Bonn, Germany, from 6 to 15 November, by IMO’s Stefan Micallef.

The Panama Canal Authority has announced the inauguration of the Emissions Calculator, a tool which will help operators assess their carbon emissions, rank those who have reduced emissions crossing the Canal instead of other routes and encourage the decarbonization of vessels.

A group of international shipping industry leaders will join forces at the 23rd session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Climate Change in November, to drive industry action on decarbonisation.
