Cosco Shipping leads list of weak Chinese performers

China Cosco Shipping reported a 98.48% fall in profits in Combined first-quarter net profit of China's largest non-financial state-owned enterprises dropped 13.6% from a year ago to 181.4 billion yuan (US$28.78bil), a state-owned asset watchdog said yesterday, reflecting a slowing economy.The weak reading was expected after firms like China Cosco Shipping reported a 98.48% fall in profits in the first quarter after a record full-year loss in 2011.China's economic growth dropped to 8.1% in the first quarter of 2012, the weakest reading since the global financial crisis of 2008-09.The State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission said profits of the 118 enterprises, including China's state oil giants and telecom operators, in March alone, however, were strong at 82.6 billion yuan, or 50.6% higher than February's.Combined profits of state enterprises in the first quarter of 2009 plunged 41.8% from the same period a year earlier to 119.5 billion yuan when China was hit hard by global financial turmoil.While national industrial champions, such as Petro-China and China Mobile, are regarded by Beijing as the backbone of the economy, independent economists argue that the expansion of government-controlled enterprises has impeded growth of private businesses in the world's No. 2 economy.The profits made by the ...

COSCO Shipyard Group Secures Contract for Seven Bulk Carriers

From a European Company COSCO (Guangdong) Shipyard Co., Ltd (a subsidiary of the Company's 51% owned subsidiary, COSCO Shipyard Group Co., Ltd), has secured a contract from a European company to build a bulk carrier of 35,000 dwt.The vessel is scheduled for delivery in the first quarter of 2013. Separately, COSCO (Zhoushan) Shipyard Co., Ltd (which is also a subsidiary of COSCO Shipyard Group Co., Ltd.) has secured two contracts and four option contracts from another European company to build a total of six units of 64,000 dwt bulk carriers with eco-friendly and fuel-efficient designs.The two contracts will become effective following approval from the shipbuilder's board of directors.Delivery of the two vessels is expected to be in the first quarter and the second quarter of 2014 respectively. Agreement for the acquisition of a Maritime Crew Resource Management Cosco Maritime (UK), part of one of the world's largest shipping groups, has signed an agreement with Oxford Aviation Academy (OAA) for the acquisition of a Maritime Crew Resource Management (MCRM) licence to deliver training at its Shanghai Training Centre, China. In addition to providing MCRM training support to Cosco's instructor team, OAA training materials will also be translated into Mandarin Chinese.OAA's MCRM training programme is a human factors training course, based on the core principles of aviation Crew Resource Management (CRM). China's biggest container lines to enlarge space-swap arrangements as Asia-Europe shake-up continues China's two biggest container lines are to work more closely together as an extensive shake-up of the Asia-Europe trades continues.According to a report in IFW's sister publication, Lloyd's List, Cosco Container Line and China Shipping have unveiled plans to expand their space-swap arrangements next year.
