This week, Lloyd’s Register has awarded Approval in Principle (AiP) to Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) for its new Onboard Guidance System, which is designed to prevent excessive container roll at sea for containerships.

Mr. John Butler, President and CEO of the World Shipping Council (WSC), highlights that safety comes first and, in that regard, WSC is working along with other members to prevent accidents due to unsafe cargo. He refers to the MARINE Top Tier study that revealed the risks of parametric for container vessels and continues work to prevent incidents with containers lost at sea. 

The Merchant Vessel MSC SHRISTI, a container ship traveling from Boston to the Dominican Republic, notified Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre via email on March 3rd that, while passing at approximately 350 nautical miles east of Bermuda, the ship had lost overboard a total of 46 empty shipping containers at three different times due to bad weather.

The Maritime Research Institute of the Netherlands (MARIN), has released a new, informative video on TopTier, the joint industry project on container loss. This project is an effort of forty participants in the maritime industry in order to drastically reduce an important issue in container transport. 

The 2,038 TEU Wan Hai 288 and the 920 TEU Resurgence collided on the Long Tau river in southern Vietnam on 11 February. The two ships were severely damaged and several containers from the first ship were destroyed as the port bow of the vessel was hit by Resurgence, whose bow was crunched in the incident.

A Tanzanian cargo ship sank on January 24, in a jetty in the southern Iranian port of Assaluyeh, as state media reported.

In its latest article on the "Good Catch" series, the American Club focuses not on a specific incident, but on container losses in general; a phenomenon that becomes much too common lately.

On January 7, a containership listed hard over at a pier at Mundra International Container Terminal, dropping a large quantity of cargo over the side.

ATSB published its final report into the loss of containers from "APL England" off Sydney in 2020, noting the importance of vessel fixtures being regularly maintained to ensure they are secure and stable.

The IMO Sub-Committee on Carriage of Cargoes and Containers held its 8th session, a hybrid one (CCC 8) agreed draft new requirements for mandatory reporting of lost freight containers at sea.
