5 passengers hurt A passenger ship collided with a cargo vessel in Cebu City, leaving five passengers, including a one-year-old child, injured Thursday, the Coast Guard said yesterday.Reports reaching Coast Guard commandant Admiral Ramon C. Liwag said that MV Jadestar Tres with 17 crew and 75 passengers onboard collided with LCT Sto. Nino of Mandaue Shipping off Shell Island, Talisay City, Cebu.As a result of the collision, five passengers of MV Jadestar suffered injuries and were taken to the Chong Hua Hospital for medical attention.They were identified as Rolando Mera, 42, of Mandaue City, Cebu, Samson Omabrosa, 59, of Inabanga, Bohol, Mercides Hongko, 87,of Calape, Bohol, Aniceto Torremucha, 27, of Lapu-lapu City, Cebu, and one-year-old Daniel Inot.After the incident, MV Jadestar was able to proceed to Pier 3 in Cebu while the cargo vessel returned to Cabahug Wharf, Mandaue City.Coast Guard spokesman Algier Ricafrente said an investigation into the incident is underway.The masters of the two vessels identified as Capt. The causes of the collision The National Transportation Safety Board today determined that the probable cause of a 2009 collision in San Diego Bay between a United States Coast Guard patrol boat and a recreational motorboat was due to the excessive speed of the Coast Guard boat in nighttime conditions in an area of high vessel density, and the Coast Guard's ineffective oversight of its small boat operations nationally and at Coast Guard Station San Diego.On December 20, 2009, at about 5:44 p.m. PST in San Diego Harbor, a 33-foot-long Special Purpose Craft-Law Enforcement (SPC-LE) Coast Guard vessel with five crewmembers aboard collided with a 24-foot-long Sea Ray recreational boat carrying 13 people. The collision occurred during an annual holiday boating event, the Parade of Lights. The Coast Guard boat, which was responding to a reported grounding (considered a non-emergency), struck the Sea Ray from behind. As a result, an 8-year-old boy was killed and four other people were seriously injured. The 2,314-teu MSC Chitra (built 1980), declared a constructive total loss following a collision in Mumbai port nine months ago, had been sold for demolition following its release by port authorities.According to brokers, a deal had been struck with Indian breakers at $472 per ldt, earning owner Mediterranean Shipping Corp (MSC) around $7m. But the ship never made it to the breakers yard.Sources say there were serious concerns over whether the MSC Chitra was in a suitable condition to complete the trip to Alang.

USCG responds to collision of two vessels near Gulfport Ship Channel

The one sank with 16 persons aboard The Coast Guard is responding to a report of a collision between two vessels. Wendesday, 10 miles south of Gulfport near Ship Island in the Gulf of Mexico.At 8:50 pm, watchstanders at Coast Guard Station Gulfport were notified that a collision had occured between the Sandy Point, a 163-foot fishing vessel, and a 660-foot container vessel, the Eurus London, approximately eight miles offshore Gulfport between Cat Island and Ship Island. The Sandy Point sank, following the collision with 16 persons abroad.A pilot boat safely recoverd 11 people from the water and transferred them to the fishing vessel Frosty Morn. Two additional crewmembers of the Sandy Point made it on theri own to the Eurus London.The Coast Guard is currently searching for three people who were aboard the Sandy Point.The Coast Guard has established a safety zone of approximately 25-square miles between Cat Island and Ship Island south of Gulfport to allow for safe search and rescue and pollution response operations.The cause of the accident is under investigation.Source: USCG

Greek ferry Superferry II collided in Philippines A passenger ship and a cargo ship collided at Lawis Ledge in Talisay City, Cebu early Thursday morning.The M/V Super Ferry 2 was plying from Nasipit, Agusan del Norte when it collided with the M/V General Romulo of NMC shipping.All 520 passengers of the M/V Super Ferry were reported to be safe. No crew members of M/V Gen. Romulo were harmed.Initial investigations of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Central Eastern Visayas Detachment revealed that both ships entered the Lawis Ledge at the same time and eventually collided.Lawis Ledge is a narrow channel which serves as a point of entry for all vessels from Mindanao bound for Cebu.Commander Anelito Gabisan, spokesperson of PCG Central Eastern Visayas Detachment said investigations pertaining the incident are being conducted.He added that both ship captains have been asked to submit their marine protest before they can leave the ports of Cebu.Source: ABS-CBN News
