EMP to jointly deploy renewable energy project

Eco Marine Power (EMP) announced that it has begun a project to jointly deploy and evaluate with Blue Star Ferries of Greece, a range of innovative renewable energy related technologies for shipping including the Aquarius Management and Automation System (MAS) with an integrated marine solar power system. The Blue Star Delos Renewable Energy Innovation Project is a major step forward towards making shipping more sustainable through the use of renewable energy and fuel reduction solutions on-board ships. The project will evaluate in stages, a number of solutions developed by Eco Marine Power (EMP) and its strategic partners on-board the "Blue Star Delos" - a modern high speed passenger and car ferry owned and operated by the multi-award winning Greek shipping company - Blue Star Ferries of Athens, Greece - a member of Attica Group. Blue Star Delos and sister vessel Patmos already incorporate sustainable vessel technology being the first vessels in the Mediterranean region that use the hybrid shaft generator system (HSG) - an innovative sophisticated active front end frequency converter system enabling the shaft generators to be constantly connected to the ships' grid, improving power factor and creating less Nox emissions. In addition HVAC and engine room ventilation use ...

US Navy shows interest in biofuels

Recently the U.S. Department of Defense (U.S. DoD) released its annual procurement for bulk fuels to be delivered to its facilities in the eastern and inland United States and Gulf Coast. For the first time, this procurement requests military-specification diesel fuel and jet fuel that are blended with biofuels. The biofuels components, are optional and will only be accepted if certain cost and performance requirements are met. A similar procurement for the Rocky Mountain and West Coast regions is expected to be released later this year. The U.S. Navy's interest in biofuels is part of its goal to generate 50% of its energy from alternative sources by 2020: nuclear energy, electricity from renewable sources, and biofuels. The Navy currently sources about 17% of its energy supplies from renewable and nuclear sources of electricity. No biofuels are currently included in that percentage. The Navy's interest in biofuels is limited to those fuels that can be used as direct replacements for petroleum-based gasoline and distillate fuels, also known as drop-in biofuels. These fuels require no modification or operational changes to distribution infrastructure, aircraft, or ships. Although biodiesel blends readily with diesel fuel or jet fuel, and is compatible with most diesel engines, ...

Rosneft to monitor marine fauna in the Northern Sea Route

OAO NK Rosneft will conduct marine fauna monitoring in the Northern Sea Route in 2014. The studies will be organized by the Arctic Research Center, a joint venture of Rosneft and ExxonMobil. The objective of the said studies is collection of data on marine fauna in Rosneft License Areas with a view to building a complete and detailed picture of the baseline environment state and developing a set of environmental controls to be applied during hydrocarbons exploration and production. The studies will cover animals, birds and mammals of northern seas. The said activities will be conducted on two icebreakers by several marine mammal observation teams. During the entire period of the vessels voyage along the Northern Sea Route (from this July through this October) marine mammal observation and marine fauna monitoring will be conducted. A set of surveys will be performed: Marine mammal activity monitoring and registration throughout daylight hours; Monitoring and registration of other marine animal species' activity; Keeping record of visual observations of marine mammals and their activity. The survey activities are planned in all northern seas of the Arctic. Source: Rosneft  In the start, I was open with you propecia before and after has changed my being. ...

ICS calls for harmonised PSC with respect to SECAs

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) is encouraging the Paris Memorandum of Understanding on Port State Control to ensure that a harmonised approach to PSC inspections has been developed in advance of the 1 January 2015 deadline with respect to the implementation of the 0.1% Sulphur Emission Control Areas (ECAs), established in accordance with MARPOL Annex VI. ICS has underlined the shipping industry's commitment to full compliance with the IMO sulphur ECA requirements from January 2015. However, ICS is concerned that information collected by its member national ship owners' associations suggests that many governments are not yet prepared to implement the requirements in a uniform manner, in order to ensure the prevention of a potentially serious market distortion. ICS Secretary General, Peter Hinchliffe explained: "The shipping industry is investing billions of dollars in order to ensure compliance with this major regulatory change, and the huge costs involved could have a profound impact on the future structure of the entire shipping industry. We therefore think it is vital that governments get the details of any PSC intervention right as we enter a new world in which fuel costs for many ships will increase overnight by 50% or more." He added: "There ...

Marine Biofuels to Increase by 2024

Biorefinery construction in the U.S. will represent two-thirds of the global market over the next 10 years, report concludes Aviation and marine biofuels represent one of the fastest-growing segments of the global biofuels market.  In the last five years, more than 40 commercial airlines around the world have flown an estimated 600,000 miles powered at least in part by biofuels. According to a recent report from Navigant Research, much of the development in this sector centers on the world's largest aviation market: the United States.  By 2024, the report concludes, biofuels will make up 6.1 percent of the aviation and marine fuel market in the U.S. "The United States is expected to emerge as the clear leader in the construction of integrated biorefineries capable of producing bio-based jet fuel and marine distillates over the next 10 years," says Mackinnon Lawrence, research director with Navigant Research. "New biorefinery construction in the U.S. is expected to generate $7.8 billion in cumulative revenue over the next 10 years, representing 66 percent of the revenue generated globally." The European Union (EU) is also an active participant in the emerging aviation and marine biofuels market, according to the report.  The biggest wildcard in forecasting EU growth ...

Exxonmobil launches new low sulphur fuel

ExxonMobil Marine Fuels & Lubricants has launched a new marine fuel designed to help marine operators comply with the 0.10 percent sulphur cap set to be introduced in Emission Control Areas (ECA) beginning 1 Jan. 2015. ExxonMobil Premium Heavy Distillate Marine ECA 50 (HDME 50) is a new category of marine fuel formulated to meet the 2015 ECA sulphur limit and to help marine engineers safely and efficiently operate their engines and boilers. ExxonMobil Premium HDME 50 offers performance benefits associated with both marine gas oil (MGO) and heavy fuel oil (HFO). The fuel contains a low sulphur content associated with MGO, and has the higher flashpoint and lower volatility properties typically found in HFO. These characteristics enable marine operators to comply with the upcoming sulphur cap and to reduce the risk of engine and boiler damage. The higher viscosity of ExxonMobil Premium HDME 50 makes storage and handling the fuel on board similar to HFO. With the fuel having to be heated, the risk of thermal shock to engine components is reduced during switchovers when entering and leaving an ECA. Thermal shock can result in fuel pumps seizures and engine shutdowns. Prior to its introduction, ExxonMobil Premium HDME 50 ...
