ICS calls for harmonised PSC with respect to SECAs

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) is encouraging the Paris Memorandum of Understanding on Port State Control to ensure that a harmonised approach to PSC inspections has been developed in advance of the 1 January 2015 deadline with respect to the implementation of the 0.1% Sulphur Emission Control Areas (ECAs), established in accordance with MARPOL Annex VI. ICS has underlined the shipping industry's commitment to full compliance with the IMO sulphur ECA requirements from January 2015. However, ICS is concerned that information collected by its member national ship owners' associations suggests that many governments are not yet prepared to implement the requirements in a uniform manner, in order to ensure the prevention of a potentially serious market distortion. ICS Secretary General, Peter Hinchliffe explained: "The shipping industry is investing billions of dollars in order to ensure compliance with this major regulatory change, and the huge costs involved could have a profound impact on the future structure of the entire shipping industry. We therefore think it is vital that governments get the details of any PSC intervention right as we enter a new world in which fuel costs for many ships will increase overnight by 50% or more." He added: "There ...

Marine Biofuels to Increase by 2024

Biorefinery construction in the U.S. will represent two-thirds of the global market over the next 10 years, report concludes Aviation and marine biofuels represent one of the fastest-growing segments of the global biofuels market.  In the last five years, more than 40 commercial airlines around the world have flown an estimated 600,000 miles powered at least in part by biofuels. According to a recent report from Navigant Research, much of the development in this sector centers on the world's largest aviation market: the United States.  By 2024, the report concludes, biofuels will make up 6.1 percent of the aviation and marine fuel market in the U.S. "The United States is expected to emerge as the clear leader in the construction of integrated biorefineries capable of producing bio-based jet fuel and marine distillates over the next 10 years," says Mackinnon Lawrence, research director with Navigant Research. "New biorefinery construction in the U.S. is expected to generate $7.8 billion in cumulative revenue over the next 10 years, representing 66 percent of the revenue generated globally." The European Union (EU) is also an active participant in the emerging aviation and marine biofuels market, according to the report.  The biggest wildcard in forecasting EU growth ...

Exxonmobil launches new low sulphur fuel

ExxonMobil Marine Fuels & Lubricants has launched a new marine fuel designed to help marine operators comply with the 0.10 percent sulphur cap set to be introduced in Emission Control Areas (ECA) beginning 1 Jan. 2015. ExxonMobil Premium Heavy Distillate Marine ECA 50 (HDME 50) is a new category of marine fuel formulated to meet the 2015 ECA sulphur limit and to help marine engineers safely and efficiently operate their engines and boilers. ExxonMobil Premium HDME 50 offers performance benefits associated with both marine gas oil (MGO) and heavy fuel oil (HFO). The fuel contains a low sulphur content associated with MGO, and has the higher flashpoint and lower volatility properties typically found in HFO. These characteristics enable marine operators to comply with the upcoming sulphur cap and to reduce the risk of engine and boiler damage. The higher viscosity of ExxonMobil Premium HDME 50 makes storage and handling the fuel on board similar to HFO. With the fuel having to be heated, the risk of thermal shock to engine components is reduced during switchovers when entering and leaving an ECA. Thermal shock can result in fuel pumps seizures and engine shutdowns. Prior to its introduction, ExxonMobil Premium HDME 50 ...

LR supports safe LNG bunkering in Portsmouth

LR has commenced a project to identify the technical specifications and develop operating procedures for safe LNG bunkering in Portsmouth International Port. The project will position Portsmouth to develop its ambitions to become an LNG bunkering facility and hub - the first in the United Kingdom. Leonidas Karistios, Global Gas Technology Manager, Lloyd's Register said: "Obviously with growing demand for LNG, ports are looking to understand how they can develop the capability to deliver LNG bunkering services safely. It has to be safety first and Portsmouth is looking to ensure that they have the right, safe, approach to support operational and commercial ambitions. With a city adjacent to the port, significant ferry traffic and a large naval presence, there are substantial and varied stakeholder aspects to be addressed." Brittany Ferries latest newbuild, scheduled for delivery in 2016, will be gas fuelled and will call at Portsmouth where LNG bunkering will take place. Kalvin Baugh, Deputy Ferry Port Manager, said: "With changes in the regulations governing emissions, it is clear that in the future more shipping will be fuelled by LNG. To help safeguard the port and meet the needs of our customers, Portsmouth International Port needs to be able to offer ...

Three companies join to launch the first RSD CNG tug

Three companies have teamed up to bring the first ever Reverse Stern Drive (RSD) Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) tug to the market. Damen Shipyards of the Netherlands, German engine manufacturer MTU Friedrichshafen, a subsidiary of Rolls-Royce Power Systems, and Denmark's SVITZER have embarked on the pioneering project with the official launch of the new eco-friendly tug planned for 2016. The new RSD CNG tug combines high power with lower fuel costs and a substantial reduction in emissions. Martijn Smit, Damen Sales Manager Europe, says: "Damen is proud to be building the prototype. With the MTU 4000 engine, this vessel is excellent for ship handling, with very quick acceleration. Manoeuvrability is combined with the vessel being green, clean and efficient." The new 16-cylinder pure gas engine being developed by MTU is based on its proven workboat Series 4000 M63 diesel engine. It will be complemented with a multipoint gas injection system, a dynamic engine control and an optimised safety concept. "We are developing our new gas Series in order to meet the extreme load profile of the tugboat. The acceleration will be comparable to the level of our diesel engines. Due to the clean combustion concept, compliance with IMO Tier 3 ...

Korean Maritime University receives course in Shipdex

The Korean Maritime University (KMU) and the Korean Marine Electronics Industry Promotion Association (MEIPA) received a one day technical seminar about Shipdex and the process of importing Shipdex data into SpecTec's Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS), AMOS. This seminar happened at KMU in Busan on May 30th thanks to Mr. Yung-Ho Yu, Professor at KMU and Technical Director of MEIPA; Marco Vatteroni, SpecTec's ILS Manager and Shipdex Manager; and Ben Fan, SpecTec's Sales Director in Asia. Mr. Hahn Kang, SpecTec's Sales Manager and manager of SpecTec's Korean office, organised the seminar. KJ Radio and NET provided additional sponsorship. Shipyards, shipowners, and local IT companies, ready to learn more about the Shipdex Protocol and its practical aspects, absorbed the information. For more information about Shipdex, refer to our website: www.shipdex.com. The focus of the seminar was on the most important Shipdex principles and their advantages for the shipping community, for example, Common Source Data Base management and the easy import of Shipdex data into a CMMS. AMOS (Asset Management Operating System), the ERP software owned and distributed by SpecTec Group, provides a ready-made tool to import Shipdex data sets. Shipping Markets are highly regulated, even from the first stages of a ...
