ClassNK has resumed operations in Iran with the reopening of its Tehran Office and agreements with the Iranian Classification Society (ICS) and Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO), Ministry of Roads & Urban Development of Iran.

K Line has selected ClassNK Consulting Service’s machinery condition monitoring and automatic diagnostic system ClassNK CMAXS LC-A for use on one of its container vessels for fuel savings, marking the first commercial application of the software.

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. announced that it has entered into a joint study to equip in-service vessels with SOX scrubber system, to ensure compliance with upcoming international environmental regulations. Based on R&D outcomes from a project carried out through ClassNK’s Joint R&D for Industry Program, ClassNK now treats bulkheads and decks including steel plates of a thickness of ≥6mm as having a weighted sound reduction index (Rw) of 35dB, the level required between cabin to cabin by the Code, which will streamline the design and construction process.

The database service operated by ClassNK’s wholly owned subsidiary Ship Data Center (ShipDC) has been set to receive marine weather information from Japan Weather Association.

The leading classification society ClassNK held a ship recycling seminar in Tokyo on 12 May . Around 300 people gathered to attend the seminar In addition to ClassNK representatives, top industry experts from Asia and Europe discussed the current challenges of ship recycling and what the industry can do to support safe and environmentally sound recycling practices.

While retaining the same yield and tensile strength and weldability as conventional steels, highly ductile steel (HDS) is distinguished by greater ductility. The consequence is that HDS plate has been shown to be able to absorb significantly more energy than its conventional counterpart without rupturing, should it be involved in a 90° collision.

Fujitsu Limited announced that it has built a maritime big data platform for ClassNK available from April, 2016.This platform collects and accumulates machinery operational data from moving vessels, such as engine data, as well as marine weather information, as big data.

The subsidiary set up by ClassNK, Ship Data Center Co., Ltd., has officially commenced operations of its big data center, ShipDC, from April 2016.

ClassNK announced the release of the fourth version of its Guidelines for Gas Fuelled Ships. The new guidelines provide comprehensive, up-to-date information on key design features relating to bunkering, hull structure, fire safety, and explosion prevention measures for gas fueled vessels.
