BIMCO and a group of industry partners have set out to create an internationally recognised standard for hull biofouling. The standard aspires to ensure that the cleaning process is safe and effective. Currently, the standard undergoes practical trials, in order to send it to appropriate international organisations for endorsement.

Identifying organisms and microbes in ballast water, as well as monitoring port marine life where ballast water may be released, are key for countries preparing to enforce IMO's Ballast Water Management Convention. A workshop in Batumi, Georgia, from 3 to 5 July provided participants from nine countries with theoretical and practical training in compliance, monitoring and enforcement of the Convention.

IMO’s MEPC 72 discussed key environmental issues for global shipping industry on 9-13 April. While global attention was focused on the adoption of initial strategy for the GHG emissions reduction from ships, key themes also included the 2020 sulphur limit, the BWM Convention, HFO use in Arctic, marine litter and biofouling.

From 15 May, all commercial and recreational vessel operators will have to show they have managed biofouling on their vessels before they enter New Zealand waters. In view of this, NZ's Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) has released guidance on how international vessels can comply with strict new biofouling rules.

Experts from ballast water testing facilities worldwide gathered at IMarEST headquarters in London, on 1-2 February, to discuss the science behind BWM. The meeting was part of the Global TestNet, a forum of organizations involved in standardization and openness of testing for the certification of BWMS.

A team of chemistry researchers from the University of Sydney Nano Institute has created nanostructured surface coatings that have anti-fouling properties without using any toxic components. The new coating uses ‘nanowrinkles’ which are inspired by the carnivorous Nepenthespitcher plant.

New Zealand’s Craft Risk Management Standard requires all vessels arriving shall have a clean hull or adhere to biofouling management best practices. As only few months are left for compliance, the country’s Ministry for Primary Industries encourages operators to contact staff to discuss compliance options for their vessels.

The California State Lands Commission issued a letter to ship agents that might call in California ports, addressing the implementation of biofouling management requirements and reminding of existing reporting requirements.
