During “The Future of Maritime Safety & Security and Clean Shipping in the Baltic Sea Region” seminar, held on May 30, policy makers, industry representatives and Flagship Projects met in Brussels, to discuss the potentials and future. The Danish Maritime Authority brought focus on maritime safety and security and clean shipping in the Baltic Sea Region.

Top players from marine and IT-industry have teamed up to jointly develop world's first system of autonomous ships. The shared vision for the ecosystem partners is to enable fully remote controlled vessels in the Baltic Sea in three years and to achieve autonomous commercial maritime traffic by 2025.

Baltic Exchange Chief Executive, Mark Jackson, has set out the Exchange’s ambition to play a bigger role in the shipping industry, building consensus in the market, by moving into the LNG and container spaces and remaining at the heart of the bulk shipping industry for the long-term.

Klaipėdos nafta and Fluxys signed a memorandum of understanding, to collaborate closely in the development of small-scale LNG projects and infrastructure in Europe. The two companies agreed when KN, as part of a Lithuanian energy delegation, visited Fluxys’ Zeebrugge LNG terminal and its small-scale LNG facilities in Belgium.

The Baltic Ports Organization has always supported the efforts to keep the Baltic Sea region clean, while at the same time emphasizing the importance of a level playing field for the entire maritime sector. A similar sentiment can be found reflected in the recent adopted declaration to designate the Mediterranean Sea an Emission Control Area (ECA), aimed at limiting air pollution from ships.

Arctia’s main mission is to safeguard icebreaking operations and winter navigation in the Finnish marine areas. Latest CSR reporting showcases that, during 2016, the company achieved all of its targets set in the Baltic Sea by offering reliable services in Arctic conditions.

In order to strengthen its response capacity network, EMSA announced the launch of a procurement procedure to contract a new stand-by oil spill recovery vessel in the Northern Baltic Sea.

BPO announced that, during the Green InfraPort project held on 7.3.2017, the topics discussed included energy management in ports and terminals, on-shore power supply, port reception facilities and small-scale LNG infrastructure development.

The Warsaw conference, held on 21st November, was focused on enhancing inland navigation in the Baltic Sea Region. Some important steps have already been taken in promoting inland navigation but it is not yet fully utilized regardless of the benefits it carries.
