A criminal investigation has started regarding the fire that has been burning a few days now on the ship, X-Press Pearl. Relevant authorities will interview all crew of the ship.
What is more, on top of the investigation, Sri Lanka will also sue X-Press Feeders, as the ship has been burning for 11 days, while it has also caused a large marine pollution. The legal action will also regard the crew, as well as insurers.
Sri Lankan authorities also added that the incident has caused the “worst marine pollution” Sri Lanka has ever suffered.
As of now, the fire is believed to have erupted due to poorly packed acid in one container. In addition, tons of microplastics have been washed up on Sri Lanka’s coast.
Currently the fire is under control, while the hull remains in tact. Nevertheless, the ship is considered a total loss.
