Jiangnan Shipyard launched the “Jiangnan Smart Sail”, a wind-assisted propulsion system. The system uses sails on sand-proof flat-bottomed wooden boats.
Jiangnan Smart Sail” is based on a computing platform to evaluate sail aerodynamic characteristics and select air-foil parameters. Depending on the direction of the wind, the sails will produce the best boosting effect with the best position of the sails being selected, saving up to 4% of energy of the ships.
In rough sea conditions, the sails can be quickly retracted and stored to ensure the safety of the ship. The sail surface material of the sail is made of polymer composite materials, and the lightweight design of the whole sail is carried out under the requirement of ensuring structural strength under wind pressure.
The “Jiangnan Smart Sail” does not need to be installed in a dock and can be installed anytime and anywhere according to the needs of the shipowner.
Jiangnan Shipyard is looking to form a modular design of the sail system to suit different sizes and types of vessels.
