The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has announced the Maritime Energy Training Facility (METF) Digital Platform, an initiative to help the global maritime workforce access training in the safe handling of alternative marine fuels and new technologies.
The prototype platform was showcased on 27 March at the “Accelerating Digitalisation and Decarbonisation Conference” at Singapore Maritime Week (SMW) and will be ready by the second half of 2025. The METF was first introduced at SMW 2024 as part of Singapore’s efforts to advance maritime decarbonisation and workforce development.
METF platform’s features
-
Offers a systematic and easy way for maritime companies, seafarers, and maritime professionals to find relevant courses, register, and pay for them
-
Tracks training progress and certifications received, helping monitor compliance with industry and regulatory standards
-
Streamlines administrative processes such as training grant eligibility and certification management
-
Reduces administrative burden on maritime companies
-
Makes training more accessible for seafarers and maritime professionals
-
Currently available to Singapore-based maritime companies and Singapore-registered ships
-
Plans to extend the platform to more companies and stakeholders, including those based overseas, in the next phase
The prototype is undergoing testing and validation with a group of industry pilot users. In February 2025, In February 2025, the International Maritime Organization’s Human Element, Training and Watchkeeping Sub-Committee began developing guidelines for training seafarers in alternative fuels and technologies. MPA proposed draft training guidelines for methanol and ammonia handling, based on Singapore’s expertise. The METF Digital Platform will support these courses, ensuring seafarers access training that meets evolving safety and operational standards.
To remind, as part of a renewed partnership with MPA Singapore during Singapore Maritime Week, Wärtsilä will introduce the Methanol Power and Control (PAC) simulation training model along with the Maritime Energy Training Facility (METF) and Wavelink Maritime Institute.
