Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has secured a 310.8 billion won ($240 million) order for two very large ammonia carriers (VLACs) from an Oceania-based shipowner.
According to the Korean Economic Daily (KED), the VLACs are expected to be delivered by 2027. Ammonia is recognized as an alternative fuel with carbon reduction potential due to its emission-free combustion of CO2.
This contract contributes to the company achieving 72% of its annual target ($9.5 billion) by securing a total of 28 vessels worth $6.8 billion in the current year, including floating liquefied natural gas production facilities, LNG carriers, dual-fuel methanol-powered container vessels, crude oil carriers, and VLACs, KED notes.
Generally, SHI has been showing interest in ammonia as an alternative maritime fuel. For instance, in early September, WinGD and SHI signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), for SHI to install WinGD’s X-DF-A dual-fuel ammonia engines on forthcoming newbuild vessels.
