The Russian Minister of Natural Resources Sergei Donskoy told that Russia is planning to build an ice-resistant self-propelled platform called “North Pole”. The platform will be operating in the Arctic all year-round. The development phase of the project will being before July 2018, and the construction will begin in 2019.
The platform will be a joint project with the Russian meteorological service “Roshydromet”, and will have an initial investment of about $120 million. It will be an all-weather platform, which will be able to operate autonomously in the Arctic for up to 3 years, RIA Novosti news agency said.
The research platform is expected to have a service life of about 25 years. It aims to improve the study of the Arctic and Antarctic and establish better and safer working conditions for researchers.
