An oil spill from a ro-ro took place in the Red Sea, with relevant authorities in Egypt and Jordan trying to deal with the situation.
The fuel leaked from the 190-lane-metre Flower of Sea, and polluted parts of the Aqaba coast, as well as waters in nearby countries. The incident is took place a week ago, and oil has been washing up on Egyptian beaches.
Local media also reported that government teams have been working to “isolate and remove the pollution” from the Aqaba container terminal and from other parts of the 26km coastline.
According to Nidal Al Majali, an official at the Aqaba Economic Zone, the spill was because of a “fault” in the fuel tanks of the vessel “while it was docking in Jordanian territorial waters.”
Volunteers are also cleaning since a week.
