The video concerns HELCOM Maritime Working Group, a joint cooperation aiming to reduce shipping emissions in the Baltic Sea, which was rewarded with 20,000 euros to enhance its work.
Promoting discussions that realize these types of problems, one of the group’s success in recent years is the prohibition to release sewage from ships in international waters, as well as the implementation of the Baltic Sea as a special area in the emissions of nitrogen oxides (NECA), to significantly reduce the nitrogen to the area. As the Baltic Sea is very sensitive for eutrophication, a minimization of nitrogen oxides and sewage is vital for the environmental situation of the area.
The group is also committed on launching the green technology and alternative fuels, to achieve a sustainable development in the region.
Anna Pitersson, chair of the maritime group, notes that HELCOM has dealt with problems, such as the complexity of international negotiations, when it comes to these issues, and highlighted the great work of the organization to reach its goals.
