Joint research to use technology of the existing e-GIGS system
Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding, its subsidiary, MES Technoservice and Nippon Kaiji Kyokai have embarked on a joint research project to develop the “Condition-Based Engine Monitoring System” for the Mitsui-MAN B&W diesel engines.
The system will realize preventive maintenance by the early detection of any abnormalities of the electronically controlled diesel engines for marine use.
These days electronically controlled type engines have become the industry leader. Compared with the conventional mechanical type engines, electronically controlled engines obtain a great amount of data from the many sensors installed on the engines. However, this increase of available data can put a strain on the resources of the shipping companies. Only experienced crew members can monitor the data taken from the sensors and then judge the status of the engine condition.
The goal of this joint research project is to ensure safe operation of vessels while reducing the operating costs. The data taken from the sensors will be automatically analyzed to prevent any system failures and diagnose the performance data to extend overhaul intervals.
In 2004, MES introduced an online marine engine support system called e-GICS (electronic Global Internet Customer Support). The system provides performance diagnosis, maintenance diagnosis of main parts etc. for Mitsui MAN B&W marine diesel engine users on the web. As of the end of June 2014, the number of registered vessels on the system had already grown to 3,000.
This joint research project will use the technology of the existing e-GIGS system along with a newly developed advanced system, called e-GICSX to analyze any abnormalities or changes in performance. Starting in 2006 we began offering vessel operation support systems, such as “Fleet Monitor” and others. We are planning to launch a new comprehensive vessel management system by integrating these support systems with e-GICSX. This project is scheduled to continue until March 2016.
ClassNK Consulting Service will use the results from this joint research project to incorporate e-GICSX as part of its even more advanced and reliable service system, CMAXS.
