The Port of Rotterdam held a major crisis exercise on the Nieuwe Maas river, near the Willemskade, where Emergency services, the Harbor Master Division and other authorities copied a scenario of a collision between a chemical tanker and a party ship.
The exercise took place on Friday morning, 6 September, from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm.
It was also reported that a dangerous substance was leaking from the tanker, affecting passengers who were present on a cruise ship moored in the vicinity of the collision.
The exercise took place on the auspices of the World Port Days, a large, festive maritime event held annually in Rotterdam. Visitors of the event had also the chance to watch the exercise.
This year, the event was held on 6-8 September on the quays around the Erasmus Bridge, providing ship visits, demonstrations on the water and presentations of port companies.
This comes in line with the port’s ambition to be the most safe and efficient port in the world. This requires good cooperation, for which the port undertakes various activities.
The Port reported a total of 118 accidents through 2018, including five serious, which represents a decrease from 129 the previous year.
