The Port of Açu has signed a land reservation agreement with Sempen, marking the third green ammonia project announced at the Brazilian port within a year.
The planned facility will have a production capacity of one million tonnes of green ammonia annually, with a final investment decision (FID) expected between 2027 and 2028 and production starting in 2030. This move further solidifies Açu’s position as a key player in Brazil’s energy transition and a strategic hub for low-carbon initiatives.
Porto do Açu’s CEO, Eugenio Figueiredo, emphasized that Sempen’s integration into this hub represents another step toward establishing Açu as a leader in sustainable energy solutions.
We are the first port in the country to license a 1 million m² hydrogen and low-carbon derivatives hub, and we are currently licensing a new 2 million m² area to expand our operations.
… said Eugenio Figueiredo.
Meanwhile, Sempen’s CEO, Juan Pablo Freijo, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the project’s contribution to the global energy transition and Brazil’s renewable energy sector.
Sempen joins other companies like YamnaCo and Fuella in establishing green ammonia and hydrogen projects at Açu. YamnaCo signed a similar agreement in January for a one-million-tonne-per-year ammonia project, while Fuella secured the first land reservation for a 520MW ammonia plant expected to produce 400,000 tonnes of hydrogen carriers annually. Altogether, the port’s green ammonia hub is expected to require around 1.8GW of electrolysers to meet its production goals.
