The UK-French naval operation MDAT GoG informed that pirates fired on a crude tanker on December 12, in the Gulf of Guinea.
According to information, the ship was located 89 nautical miles off the Kome-Kribi Marine Terminal in Cameroon, after having loaded a cargo. Its destination is believed to be Wilhelmshaven in Germany.
Namely, sources report that a skiff probably approached within 200 metres and fired three shots towards the tanker’s accommodation. The attack did not escalate further.
All crewmembers are safe, and the vessel continued its journey towards the final destination.
Global piracy incidents hit lowest levels in 30 years
ICC IMB’s latest global quarterly piracy report details 90 incidents of piracy and armed robbery against ships in the first nine months of 2022, the lowest recorded figure in three decades.
Of the 90 global piracy and armed robbery incidents, 13 have been reported in the Gulf of Guinea region – compared to 27 over the same period of 2021 – signaling a positive and significant decline in the number of reported incidents in the region off west Africa which emerged as the world’s biggest piracy hotspot in recent years.
