SIGTTO has posted at its website a brief paper describing the outcome of a Risk Study concerning the transit of LNG ships through the Panama Canal post expansion.
This document has been reviewed by the Panama Canal Authority, however, the review was prior to the receipt of the final report from the independent facilitator who managed the risk workshop.
Following a country wide referendum in 2006 the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) was tasked with expanding the Panama Canal by constructing larger and more efficient locks. The larger vessel sizes and increased traffic has resulted in a number of additional changes to channels and water depths to ensure that the Panama Canal continues to operate in a safe and efficient manner.
As a consequence of the Panama Canal expansion the majority of the world’s LNG vessels will be within the maximum permitted dimensions and, subject to meeting all other requirements, will be permitted to transit the Panama Canal.
