Steps have been taken to defuel the sunken vessel MV Princess Miral, and the procedure is expected to be done within a month.
The vessel reportedly ran aground off the waters of New Mangalore on 21 June 2022. The Indian Coast Guard saved the lives of 15 Syrian seafarers after they abandoned their sinking cargo ship.
All of the seafarers were successfully recovered from lifeboats and lift rafts despite what the Coast Guard described as difficult conditions and rough weather.
It is thought that the vessel lost its direction and eventually ended up in Mangaluru, and came to Ullal. The defueling of furnace oil and diesel will likely be completed within a month.
After grounding the vessel reported hull breaches, which were causing ingress of water into the holds.
After this phase, permission will be given to removing the steel on board, and the wreck’s salvage operation will start.
