Petrotrin, a Trinidad and Tobago company, confirmed the reporting of an oil leak, at its Point-A-Pierre refinery. The leak is said to have occurred on April 23rd, at around 2:45 pm, at one of its fuel oil storage tanks at the bond.
According to the Environmental Management Authority, some 20 thousand gallons of bunker fuel was accidentally released, following the rupture of the storage tank.
The EMA says, it contacted Petrotrin and the Ministry of Energy, requesting that the National Oil-Spill Contingency Plan be activated.
Petrotrin has said in a statement that its emergency response plan was immediately initiated and efforts are continuing to contain the oil spill. Furthermore, the company conducts aerial surveys to report the exact extent of the oil spill.
