The Navigator issue 6 is dedicated on how to use radar effectively
In the last edition of The Navigator, The Nautical Institute focused on ECDIS. At new issue, The Navigator is dedicatedto radar and its onboard use. Radaris an essential tool for safe navigationand improving situational awareness. Its use should be balanced with visualobservation (in other words, looking outof the window), ECDIS and the manyother available aids to navigation.
Radarshould, however, also be appreciated forits independence and reliability.Modern radar can be highly sophisticatedand, in addition to any generic radar trainingthat navigators receive, there is a real needfor ship-specific radar familiarisation asspecified in the ISM Code. Radar can be your best friend in reducedvisibility.
New edition of The Navigator helps you to learn how to use it effectively, how far to trust it and how to balance itsuse with all the other aids to navigation.
