Amasus has signed a new contract with bound4blue to install a 22-meter eSAIL (suction sails) on a 90-meter, 2,876 dwt general cargo vessel at Astander Shipyard in Santander, scheduled for mid-2025.
As informed, the contract follows a positive experience with two 17-meter sails installed on the Eems Traveller since July 2023. According to bound4blue, the sail system improves propulsive efficiency and reduces fuel consumption, operational expenses, and emissions.
In the past year, various shipowners, including Eastern Pacific Shipping, Odfjell, Marflet Marine, and Louis Dreyfus Company, have adopted bound4blue’s Wind Assisted Propulsion Systems (WAPS) solutions.
A wind propulsion system generates thrust for the ship, allowing it to rely less on its main engine. This helps reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

Generally, wind propulsion seems to hold promise for the maritime industry, with more and more stakeholders opting for the solution. BV finds that by the end of July 2024, over 105 wind propulsion systems had already been installed on more than 45 ships globally.
