AMSA has issued a quick guide to highlight key obligations of shipmasters while transiting through the Great Barrier Reef and Torres Strait.
New ships routeing measures aimed at protecting sensitive areas in the south-west Coral Sea, off Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, were agreed by the IMO Sub-Committee on Navigation, Communications and Search and Rescue (NCSR), meeting for its 2nd session. (9-13 March).
On 23 May 2014, the IMO MSC 93 adopted a new two-way route in the Great Barrier Reef and Torres Strait. This important measure to protect the environmentally sensitive waters of the region came into effect on 1 December 2014.
The safety of shipping depends on all parties having detailed knowledge of, and complying with regulatory and other obligations and duties imposed on them in the circumstances.
