Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) has launched the BLUE ACTION NET-ZERO ALLIANCE program to help reduce Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions for shippers and Non Vessel Operating Common Carriers (NVOCCs) using ocean transport.
According to MOL , this initiative focuses on offering low-emission marine transportation services using alternative fuels, developed through collaboration with marine transportation stakeholders. MOL aims to contribute to net-zero emissions by continuously enhancing these services.
In February 2024, MOL became the first Asia-Pacific shipping company to issue environmental attributes certificates (EACs) for low-emission voyages using alternative fuels.
These certificates, tradable on a platform developed with 123Carbon B.V., allow MOL to ensure low-emission operations across its fleet and facilitate transactions with major NVOCCs like NIPPON EXPRESS HOLDINGS, C.H. Robinson, and MOL Logistics.
This system enables the issuance and allocation of EACs to customers, leading to the official launch of the program.
The program supports Scope 3 GHG emission reductions by allowing customers to reflect their participation in low-emission voyages through EACs in their sustainability reports. EACs are traded on a flexible book-and-claim model, providing companies with the option to meet their Scope 3 targets based on budget and emission goals.
The proceeds from EAC sales are used to procure alternative fuels, helping MOL further reduce its fleet’s fossil fuel usage.
