The Maersk Elba is currently under tow to the Port of Algeciras after the break out of an engine room fire that disabled the ship off Portugal’s southern coast.
As MSC informed, the vessel is currently under towage and is expected to arrive at Algeciras, Spain on 31 December 2020.
The vessel will then undergo temporary repairs before resuming its voyage to Europe.
The Portugal’s National Maritime Authority (Autoridade Marítima Nacional) informed that the Lisbon Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC Lisboa), received an alert on December 26, according to which the Danish-flagged container ship was adrift without propulsion due to a fire in the engine room.
The crewmembers of the vessel successfully extinguished the fire without assistance, and no one was injured.
The Maersk Elba was carrying cargo for MSC customers as part of our Shogun-Pearl service.
